TCAT Knoxville workforce training facility construction progress

According to recent reporting from WBIR, the new $77 million campus for Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) Knoxville is nearing completion and is expected to significantly expand workforce training opportunities across East Tennessee. As the construction manager for this transformative project, Denark is proud to help deliver a facility that will serve students, employers, and the region for decades to come.

Located at Liberty Street and Division Street in Knoxville, the new three-story campus represents a major investment in career and technical education. The project is part of a statewide initiative to strengthen workforce development through improvements to TCAT facilities across Tennessee.

Designed for Hands-On Learning

When the campus opens to students in January 2027, it will provide modern learning environments, expanded lab space, and updated equipment for a variety of academic programs. Areas housed within the new facility include:

  • Automotive Technology
  • Diesel Technology
  • Cosmetology
  • Administrative Office Technology
  • Medical Office Information Technology

The new campus will offer larger training labs and industry-relevant equipment, helping ensure students graduate with practical, real-world experience that aligns with workforce needs. School leaders have emphasized that the facility was designed with flexibility in mind, allowing programs to evolve alongside changing industry demands.

A Project with Personal Meaning

This project is especially meaningful for Denark Senior Project Manager John Farner, who once walked the halls of TCAT Knoxville as a student.

As reported by WBIR, Farner attended the institution in 1981, taking surveying and concrete classes before continuing his education at the University of Tennessee and earning an engineering degree. He credits the education and encouragement he received at TCAT with helping establish the foundation for his career.

Today, Farner is helping oversee construction of the very institution that helped shape his future.

“To see students have access to a facility like this and the opportunities it creates is incredibly rewarding,” said Farner. “Technical education can open doors to meaningful careers and provide a pathway to long-term success.”

Supporting East Tennessee’s Workforce

The need for skilled workers continues to grow across Tennessee and throughout the country. According to TCAT leadership, demand from employers for qualified professionals in technical and trade fields remains strong, making investments in workforce education more important than ever.

The new campus will help TCAT Knoxville expand its capacity and serve more students at a time when enrollment continues to grow. School officials told WBIR they anticipate enrollment increasing further once the new flagship campus opens, helping prepare the next generation of skilled professionals for careers in high-demand industries.

Building Opportunities for the Future

At Denark, we believe construction is about more than buildings. It is about creating environments where people can learn, grow, and succeed.

The new TCAT Knoxville campus will serve as a hub for workforce development, equipping students with practical skills and helping meet the needs of employers throughout East Tennessee. We are honored to partner with TCAT Knoxville on a project that will have a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities across the region.

As the project moves toward completion, we look forward to seeing future students walk through its doors and begin building careers that strengthen Tennessee’s workforce for generations to come.
