Jobsite Safety During Construction

Denark is committed to protecting our employees by developing the industry’s finest safety program. We realize that a successful safety program requires a concentrated personal effort and close cooperation between employees and subcontractors. It is only through this close cooperation that we can reduce or eliminate personal injuries, promote greater efficiency, and lower overall costs in our operation.

Two key components of our Safety Program are planning and communication. Denark tailors a Safety Plan for each project during the Preconstruction Phase. This Safety Plan identifies and schedules site-specific safety procedures to assure the project is in compliance and no employee is exposed to work related hazards.

Furthermore, the selection of Subcontractors who work safely begins before the contract award. Each potential Subcontractor’s safety record is reviewed during the Prequalification Process. The Project Team, including Denark’s Safety Manager, conducts a detailed analysis of the entire safety scope of work. In this critical analysis, agreements are solidified on safety procedures to be followed throughout the Subcontractor’s work. Some of the procedures include jobsite safety rules, crane erection, protective equipment, fall prevention/protection, personal protective equipment, confined space operations, fire prevention/protection, housekeeping, trench shoring/sloping, rigging/signaling, electrical protection, and lighting. In summary, each phase of the Subcontractor’s operation is analyzed from a safety perspective to ensure a safe operation. Job Hazard Analyses are discussed in detail, modified if necessary, and approved. The Subcontractor’s safety compliance is monitored daily by the Project Superintendent.

Training – Prior to beginning work on the project, every employee is given a project safety orientation that reviews the safety hazards associated with construction and the specific hazards on the project.

Inspections – Denark’s Safety Manager conducts regular site inspections to insure that all workers are abiding by our procedures and that the site environment is a safe one. Additionally, site visits by key management are done to insure implementation of our Safety Program. Denark’s NCCI-EMR is currently at .80.

Drug Policy – Denark imposes mandatory drug testing for all of its employees and conducts random drug tests at all sites and offices.

Due to these efforts, Denark has been awarded the highest marks in the industry for worker safety:

  • Occupational Hazards Magazine named Denark Construction, Inc. on their list of America’s Safest Companies
  • Denark was also recognized nationally for being the “best of the best” in construction safety excellence. After successfully competing at the state level, Denark went on to compete nationally and proudly accepted the Grand Award for Construction Safety Excellence at the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Annual Convention in Honolulu, Hawaii. The criteria for this award was not limited to frequency rates alone, but also examined evidence of corporate commitment to safety, overall safety program elements and innovation, level of employee involvement, work site hazard identification and control, and the company’s effectiveness in promoting safety.
  • As further proof of its dedication and commitment to safety, Denark received an award from the City of Knoxville for the completion of a milestone of one million hours worked without a lost-time accident, a record that brought the City $800,000 in insurance savings on the Knoxville Convention Center project.
